Fascism is generally considered bad, but as for me, it’s no worse than communism. And empire, is like a huge country consisting of many smaller parts (like Roman empire in the past, it covered huge part of Europe). The Italian guy who actually started fascism was called Mussolini. Hitler actually wasn’t fascist; his ideology was national-socialistic, so a horrible cross-over between fascism and communism. You can think of fascism like of past times absolute monarchy; when the king said, was right, and the people had to obey. It’s not the same, but it’s a simplification quite close to the point.
Harry Potter isn’t a fascist/dictator for one huge reason: he didn’t claim his leadership. He never wanted it, he was made leader. Yelling at your friends doesn’t mean you’re a dictator. It may mean you’re just angry, or short-tempered. And thinking you’re always right is a part of adolescence. All teenagers are this sometimes. You should also notice that when he was cutting words into his hand, he was only harming himself, no one else. It was his own choice between pride and sparing his hand (MINOR hand).
If you’ve read the books, you should know that there was this prophecy that Harry was the only one who could defeat Voldemort. He couldn’t go meet him before destroying all the horcruxes. Plus, Harry didn’t tell the people “So, you guys are to stay and fight”. No, it was THEIR choice to fight the enemy, and they knew that they could die. If they left the country, they would probably survive. Harry didn’t make them die for him. He was, most of the time, trying to reject their help.
Harry was “bossing around” in the DA group because (attention!) he was the leader! And he was CHOSEN the leader. Would you say that President Obama is bossing around the USA? About Hermione, yes, she is way smarter, and hasn’t been in many dangerous situations, but it was her own idea to pass the leadership to Harry. Being smart doesn’t make you a good leader automatically. Harry not only killed a basilisk with a sword, but he also chased away lots of dementors at one time, he faced all these dangerous creatures in Goblet of Fire, he duelled Voldemort and survived… Hermione has lots of theoretical knowledge, Harry has practical experience. Imagine one of your friends knows by heart a hundred cake recipes but never tried out any of them and another bakes just three different cakes but bakes them quite often – whom would you choose to teach you to bake a cake? Experience > knowledge.
Hiding some knowledge doesn’t make Dumbledore a fascist either. He did share lots of info with Harry, but he did a mistake that many adults make: he underestimated a teenager. Plus, Harry also did hide things from Dumbledore (remember Chamber of Secrets, when he didn’t say anything about the diary till the very end?).
Not becoming the minister wasn’t definitely selfish. First, people on top are often target for attacks, second, as leader of Order of Phoenix he could do more by acting in the shadows.
About Voldemort, yes, he is similar to fascist. Still, he’s closer to nazism (Hitler’s views) than fascism (Mussolini’s views). He is a dictator, he has quasi-fascist views (blood purity instead of country domination), severe punishment to people who disagree with his views, militarism (Death Eaters as elite army). So, congratulation. You made one sensible point here (no sarcasm).

Bossing in Order of Phoenix ans Dumbledore’s Army was because all the members thought that he was the leader (he was the founder of Dumbledore’s Army). “and like hes not even the bestest dark arts fighter or anything”. Then why everyone was thinking like that? Why they trusted him to teach them? Because he already had fought with Voldemort. Yes, Hermione is smart but she has no experience like Harry.
He killed Basilisk with a sword because he was at second grade and did not know much spells AND because he was true Gryffindor (only true Gryffindor cand pull out The Sword from Sorting hat). The Sword was the only way for him to kill that giant snake.
Yes, Dumbledore did not tell anything to Harry, but to be honest do you want to hear in the beginning of the school that during your last year you will get killed? I don’t think so. And also the idea was that he gave clues to Harry so he could find out things by himself. That is one way to make you smarter.
And the thing that he did not want to be Minister of Magic. During that time, who would? Voldemort was coming back, so obviously you don’t want to get killed by him. And he had that master plan for getting killed by Snape so he could get some approval from Voldemort by killing the one wizard he is most afraid of.

Some advice:

3. Learn what something is before you accuse something of being that. Fascist, really? Do not use words you do not understand, okay? It only makes you look even more stupid (if that was possible, that is).
There are plenty of reasons of why the HP characters acted the way they did. Harry wanted to go to Voldemort, because he couldn’t stand the idea of the people he loved sacrificed themselves for him – like his parents had -, but even wizards are humans, with human and animalistic intellect. We have survivor instincts, and therefore it is not as easy as we might want it to be, to sacrifice ourselves for others. In Twilight, Bella is prepared to sacrifice herself over and over again – but that isn’t very realistic, is it? It is not easy to sacrifice ourselves, even if we want to. We doubt, and that is one thing that makes us REAL. The HP characters are more realistic than the Twilight characters will ever be.
Why didn’t Harry go to Voldemort right away? Because those he wanted to sacrifice himself for was willing to protect him with their own lives. He couldn’t go right away, because his friends and loved ones wouldn’t let him. That’s why he snuck out in the end. They would never have let him go if he went up to them and said “hey, I’m gonna go make Voldy kill me, see ya on the other side!”. That is one reason why he didn’t go right away, smartass.
Why didn’t Harry go tell someone that Umbridge tortured him? Even when his friends told him to? Because he knew it wouldn’t help, and he knew that it was what Umbridge wanted. Dumbledore didn’t tell Harry much because he was trying to protect him. He didn’t want Harry to lose focus on what was important – to kill Voldemort – by telling him that Dumbledore was dying. It was inevitable, nothing to do about it – it was all according to plan. Severus killed Dumbledore to get to Voldemort, he was a spy. Sometimes you have to sacrifice yourself for the greater good, and all of them knew this. Dumbledore wanted to save Harry from the pain in beforehand.
Oh, and the Ministry of Magic position? Dumbledore didn’t want the position there because he knew he’d be of better use at Hogwarts, helping Harry. He knew that the Ministry wouldn’t stop Voldemort, Harry would, and therefore he dedicated his time to help Harry. Does that not make sense to you at all?

THANK YOU for the part about “the war’s not just about him.” Nobody decided to die for Harry because they thought he was a nice guy. They knew about the prophecy that he would be the one to defeat Voldemort, and they could see all the powers and attributes that made him cut out for the job (his moral strength, bravery, skill in magic, the wand situation, the horcrux situation, etc) and they made the choice to sacrifice their own lives over Harry’s because he was their best chance to win the war. Okay, first, learn the definition (and spelling) of a word before you start calling people that.
Second, just because he gives orders doesn’t make him a fascist. By that logic, any leader is a fascist, which just isn’t true.
Third, the man’s name is Mussolini.
Fourth, Harry has done a LOT more than just kill a Basilisk. By the book you mentioned he had: survived an encounter with Voldemort (three times!), won the Triwizard Tournament (which requires some skill in defensive magic just to compete) and become the youngest wizard to master the Patronus charm. He has a lot of practical experience that’s more valuable than just reading about how to protect yourself (the very thing they didn’t want).
Fifth, yes, people die for Harry. However, he doesn’t want them doing it and doesn’t ask them to do it. They do it out of their free will.
Sixth, Dumbledore hid information that wasn’t relevant to what Harry needed. There wouldn’t have been less people dying if Harry knew about Dumbledore’s past and I doubt he could live with himself if he knew that his life was what was keeping Voldemort alive.
Seventh, Dumbledore does not bring up that he could have been Minister of Magic except for once. That once, he’s talking about how horrible he would have been as Minister because he’s basically addicted to power. He realizes he won’t be able to have all that power and remain uncorrupted, so he doesn’t take the chance to begin with.
I’m not going to say everything I want to because I think Khajitt covered it nicely but I would like to add one thing to their comment.
Dumbledore didn’t accept the role as Minister of Magic because in his time with Grindewald as a teenager he learned that power was a weakness of his. When confronted with becoming powerful he chose that over taking care of his siblings when that was his responsibility.
When Ariana died he realized that Grindewald’s ideals were wrong and he wanted nothing to do with them. He also realized that he was going along with them because Grindewald’s plan gave Dumbledore a lot of power.
Dumbledore knew that if he became Minister of Magic he would become drunk with power and do bad things. Dumbledore knew himself, and he knew his weaknesses, so he avoided things that would make him do bad things.
It’s like when someone is a recovering alcoholic so they don’t go to bars because they know the temptation would be too strong and they would drink.

Honestly speaking, I am not someone who hates Twilight with an obsessive passion. I personally do not like it at all and would rather it did not exist, but I respect that there are people out there who have different opinions and they are perfectly entitled to their own opinion. Hence I don’t really continuously harp about the negative points in Twilight, accepting that I just don’t think the same one as other Twihards.
But honestly, this post has been excruciatingly painful to read. Firstly, when you want to make an argument about why you hate something, you should ensure that your argument sounds coherent, grammatically correct, and mildly convincing. I am not saying that you have to be an awesome writer with brilliant language (if you were you wouldn’t be here) but you should most definitely obey the laws of grammar, spelling and coherency to make an argument sound like you truly believe in what you are saying and know why you believe what you do. (At this point I would like to apologize if I make any such errors in this comment and seem like a hypocrite, but I assure you, that is not my intention)
Secondly, when you make an argument about something, you need to know your content well. For example, in this case you would like to make an argument about Harry Potter is not as great as everyone thinks they are. In that case, you should at least read the books so as to know exactly what you are talking about. This way, not only will you be able to find the negative points to support your argument, but also know your counter-arguments well enough to be able to find rebuttals for them. At this juncture, all you have done is to make yourself sound like a complete idiot, and I will proceed to steam roller your argument after I have mentioned the technicalities.
Finally, when you want to make an argument, you need to believe what you are saying, and convince us that you truly believe what you say. When you become uncertain, you do not at all seem coherent and convincing, which leads me to believe that you just blindly follow your beliefs. I quote, “ok, well mabey he’s not a facist….I’m not exactly sure waht a facist is, I just know they’re bad and dictator-y…..So mabey a facist is like an umpire? A bad umpire dictator???” Uncertain is oozing out in dollops here. Do you honestly believe that anyone will take you seriously after that? Its quite saddening how many people in the world just blindly follow everyone else and refuse to learn about the reasons why. It predicts quite a dark future. But I digress.
Moving on to your content, this has been repeated many times, but I feel the need to repeat it again. A dictator is someone who does not take into account the feelings and opinions of the people he or she is leading. A fascist dictator is used to describe political rulers, and is used in cases where the ruler removes foreign influences and advocates the abolishment of every other party, until a single party rules the state. I honestly doubt that fascist is being used in the correct context here, so I shall move on to the point about Harry Potter being a dictator. He most definitely considers the opinion of others important to him, given that he discusses his views with his best friends all the time, and even in the DA he took the feedback of other students to make himself a better leader and teacher. In this case, I highly doubt that a dictator is a word that can be used to describe him. I would rather prefer ‘natural leader.’ And do you honestly think that Umbridge would have let a little complaint from Harry Potter get her down? It might have made Harry’s life worse, given the fact that the Ministry was in control at that time, and the Ministry was refusing to hear a single good point about Harry.
Next, you believe that knowledge is much more important compared to experience. However, theoretical knowledge does not help us as much as experience does in real life. As Harry right says, fighting Voldemort “is not just about memorizing a bunch of spells, its just you and your guts and your brains.” Application is just as important as theoretical knowledge, if not more important, and hence Harry’s contribution as a leader was not any worse than what Hermione would have taught them. In fact, it might even have been better, as Harry not just taught them the basics of the spell, but also the reactions of the students (practice duels) as well as the application. Harry could not have done it alone, but he most definitely did a brilliant job. And what makes you think Harry is not the best dark arts fighter? He was the only one who got an Outstanding for Defence Against The Dark Arts, something that even Hermione did not achieve. (Sorry Hermione and fans, but its true)
After that, you go on to say about how everyone is dying for Harry and how Harry should have gone to Voldemort earlier. I am sorry, but the world does not revolve around Harry Potter. Sure, the prophecy says that he will be the one to deal with Voldemort, but the war was not just about defeating Voldemort. It was about fighting for the Light, fighting for a better future, fighting against the discrimination faced because of blood purity. A war is not just because of two people, but it intertwines the destiny and fate of hundreds of people. It is their fight as much as it is Harry’s. Given the fact that they each chose to fight, fully knowing the consequences, it is unfair to hold him responsible for deaths which were not even his fault. In fact, he did not want anyone to help him, he tried to refuse Ron and Hermione’s help as well, and he took on the blame, burden, guilt for every single death that has occurred. A normal 17-year-old could never have done what he did, could never have motivated himself to fight even harder to end this war after the deaths of his friends and family. And this is what you call selfish? If you still do not believe me, read the Deathly Hallows. He sacrifices his own life so that others could have a better life. It was an act of selflessness, not selfishness.
You say Dumbledore is a dictator too. Yes, he has his faults, which he admitted in Deathly Hallows, but withholding information does not equate to dictatorship. He tried to do the best for the community, and thought of the greater good as he grew older and wiser. The reason why he did not take the role of Minister of Magic was because he knew his faults – deadly pride otherwise known as hubris – and refused to give himself the temptation of controlling power. He did not trust himself to work for the greater good once he had the power, and turning down the role was an act of selflessness in itself. Whatever faults he may have, he is not a dictator.
I would continue, but I do not want to end up digressing. I have said what I wanted to say, I can only hope that you will get my message too.

Now, I really, REALLY had to force myself to read everything here. Because it was so utterly ridiculous and stupid . . . but let’s go.
1) A dictator is a person who controls every single tiny thing–how much food you get, when you work, what you work as, etc. None of the protagonists were dictators, I promise.
2) “Bosses people around?” Honey, that’s what a boss DOES. That’s what a manager at Wal-Mart DOES. That’s what the president of a big-name corporation DOES. Harry was the leader of the D.A.–the TEACHER–so yeah, he bossed them around. That’s what teachers at school do, to. Though I’m not sure if you’ve ever been to one of those. . . .
Harry was the teacher because he WAS the most qualified. The D.A. was not about who could get the best score on a test, it was about how to act in a REAL situation. As he was the only student in the school that had fought against the Dark Arts in actual person, he was the most qualified.
Also, I get the feeling that the “Get behind me!” line in Order of the Phoenix when they were in the Department of the Mysteries is another reason why you keep saying that Harry was selfish. That’s called selfLESS. He was willing to sacrifice himself. If that act had been selfISH, then he could have told the others to get in FRONT of him.
3) He didn’t tell anyone about Umbridge’s punishments because, for one thing, he had been brought up by the Dursleys. You strike me as a person who doesn’t realize that they were abusive, and if you do realize that they were abusive, then you don’t realize the psychological effects that can have on a person. Those same psychological effects are one of the few reasons you can say that Harry never told anyone. For another thing–well, he said it himself. If he went to anybody, then it would have been UMBRIDGE that “won,” that beat Harry–not him.
4) The reason why Harry didn’t go to Voldemort at first was because Voldemort could not have been killed UNLESS Harry destroyed all of the Horcruxes. It’s not his fault that Dumbledore left him a mission to do. That wasn’t selfish–in fact, that was pretty fucking brave. If he had gone running for the hills, then THAT would have been selfish.
5) Dumbledore was a military-like leader. Tell me, do you think that we know everything that goes on in America? Are you aware that the government is using technology that we won’t get until another ten years? Do you think that our leaders are completely and utterly open and honest with us? If you do, then you’re incredibly naive.
Besides that, Dumbledore didn’t go for the Minister job because he found when he was a young adult that he could not be trusted with power. Do you remember in Order of the Phoenix, when Lupin told Harry that power had gone to Fudge’s head? That same reason is why Dumbledore didn’t become the Minister of Magic. Him NOT doing becoming such a politician was an act of selflessness, not selfishness.

And, in the end, at least Harry had the common decency of participating in all of the fights, but all Bella did was lying half dead somewhere or screaming for all except one of the fights.

3. Harry yells at people because that’s what people tend to do when they’re upset. Harry is meant to be human, so he’s going to react like most humans do. Harry’s major character flaw is his anger. There’s plenty of times that Harry takes advice from people. It’s obvious that you haven’t read the books.
There’s no way Umbridge would’ve been stopped in Order of the Phoenix because Umbridge had full jurisdiction and authority to do what she wished from the Ministry of Magic. Harry didn’t want to give her the satisfaction of knowing she’d got to him. I repeat, I’m not convinced you’ve read the books if you didn’t know that. Umbridge’s evil was very watered down for the movie. In the book she’s an absolute monster and nothing Harry said or did was going to change that.
3. Yes, a lot of people die in Deathly Hallows because it’s a WAR! People tend to die in war! Harry had to find all the Horcruxes because without destroying them there wasn’t a hope for Voldemort to be defeated. Yes, people died but Harry ended up laying down his very life to destroy the most evil wizard to ever live. I don’t call that fascism. I call that the ultimate sacrifice and it moved me to tears when I first read that book. I know I wasn’t the only one.
4. Harry told people what to do in Dumbledore’s Army because they voted him to be the leader and he was TEACHING THEM DEFENCE AGAINST THE DARK ARTS!!!!!! Hermione refused to be the leader because Harry WAS the best Dark Arts fighter and he’d had actual experience fighting Voldemort himself. Harry initially didn’t want to lead Dumbledore’s Army; Ron and Hermione convinced him that he could do it, There’s several pages spent on this in a few chapters. And yes fighting a Basilisk counts as fighting the Dark Arts.
5. Dumbledore….evil?…..Oh my goodness I’m nearly crying. Stupid….ridiculous….unbelievable….NO! Just NO! Dumbledore is the pinnacle of goodness in Harry Potter. He’s about as far from evil as you can get. He’s the one everyone turns to, he’s full of wisdom and he’s the only person Voldemort ever feared.
The final book is very clear on why Dumbledore didn’t share more with Harry; he had to work it out himself. It’s a huge part of the story, it’s fully explained and I know you didn’t read the books.
Dumbledore never wanted to be Minister of Magic because he didn’t want to risk the power going to his head. His becoming Minister would not have changed anything; Voldemort would’ve come back regardless. Dumbledore helped the wizarding world by being Harry’s mentor than he ever could have sitting in the Minister’s office.
And for the final time, wizards wear ROBES! The Volturi wear them too. ROBES!
Also, Harry hated the fact that people died for him. I don’t think you read the books because it’s made VERY clear. Harry suffers terribly at all the deaths. Why else would he go off to destroy the Horcruxes and then sacrifice his life?

The battle wasn’t about him! The battle was about getting rid of all of the horcruxes and defeating Voldemort. Also, nobody died FOR Harry. There are several parts of the books where Harry says that he doesn’t want anyone to die for him, then someone else comes in and reminds Harry that they’re dying in an effort to stop Voldemort. In the Deathly Hallows, people are not just dying for Harry, they’re dying to stop Lord Voldemort. Harry had to find the Horcruxes to kill Lord Voldemort. It was during the fight that he found out that he had to die to stop Lord Voldemort. So, he couldn’t have decided to die BEFORE that. He decided to die RIGHT AFTER he found out that he was a Horcrux. In Dumbledore’s Army, Harry isn’t BOSSING everyone around, he’s TEACHING them. And, he’s doing that because he’s the LEADER. Yes, hermione knows spells by heart. That’s just knowledge. Harry has EXPERIENCE, so he knows the best spells to know. Even Hermione says that experience is better than knowledge. Dumbledore was NOT selfish for not being Minister for Magic. He didn’t want to become Minister. His heart was set out for headmaster of Hogwarts. Sometimes, you have to think about what the person wants. If you don’t know what a word means, DO NOT use it in your argument.

I’m going to write this honestly. I’m only fourteen and I don’t have the stronges definition of fascist implanted in my head but I know what it is enough to say that you’re being ridiculous. Harry is just a natural born leader, and knowing how to fight a bloody war isn’t being a dictator.
Hitler and Mussolini are dictators – very extreme fascist ones at that. I’m not going to go into it in much detail but I’m studying History GCSE and you learn a lot of things about why they’re fascist. Harry Potter is not fascist.
No one dies for Harry. The war isn’t about Hary – it’s about restoring peace in the Wozarding War. Harry is just an essential puzzle piece in the bigger picture. Everyone volunteered to fight and they knew what they were getting into, even those who died. Yes, Harry was like a leader, but the war wasn’t jut between Voldemort and Harry. People would have fought even if they hated Harry, I bet.
What you said about Harry being bad at Defence Against the Dark Arts is not true. The DA asked for a leader and Harry was there. Simple. Also, he was an excellent teacher and did know a lot of magic. Hermione is smarter than Harry, but Harry was better at DADA than her. If I remember correctly, Harry taught Hermione things that she didn’t know. Harry does have experience, and that’s what made him a good teacher. Him and his friends fought off a lot of Death Eaters, and that wasn’t on a whim.

Harry, the good guy, is not a fascist. He’s simply an emotional teenager who has to deal with much more than your average adult. Umbridge was trying to make Harry out to be a liar. He was telling the truth. If they had listen to him many people who have survived. Bowing down to someone stronger than you is not something to encourage people to do you know. That’s not selfishness. Neither is wanting to save your loved ones. Hermione, Ron and the others could always not go with him. He didn’t force them. They consciously chose to follow him because they were his friends.
People in DH didn’t die for Harry. They died fighting for what was right, for what they believed in. What Voldemort was trying to do, what he was trying to shape their world into, was against everything they believed. So of course they are going to fight. And of course there’s a chance to die.
Again they did so with their eyes wide open. Harry didn’t make them fight. He didn’t point his wand at anyone and said: ‘YOU! You’ll stay here and fight for me and then die just so I can live!’
In the end it was their choice.
As was his choice to go to that forest and die to assure Voldemort’s mortality.
In OotP they ELECTED him to be their leader. And they went there to learn how to protect themselves. He was their teacher, of course he told them what to do. That what’s teachers do! Among them he had the most experience in real life combat and as is explained, due to his participation in the Triwizard Tournament, he had more knowledge than the rest.
He didn’t just kill a basilisk. He found his way in the Chamber of Secrets, he fought against Voldemort twice and had special training with Lupin. The Patronus charm was very advanced and not many wizards could perform it. So yes, among the students he was the more qualified to teach them.

I guess you’re somewhat right in assuming a fascist leader is sort of a totalitarian dictator. (Just to clarify, I am anti-fascism, but…) Although history has shown otherwise, fascism first and foremost does not always mean bad or evil. It simply means a form of government where power is in the hands of one person (Mussolini, Hitler) or in one group (the Japanese Imperial Army during WW2) and where the country has more power than individuals.
Enough with the history lesson.
Harry isn’t a dictator- and I’ll tell you why that is. It’s because power was the last thing he wanted. Maybe at the beginning of Philosopher’s Stone, where he went from a dejected child living in semi-abusive conditions to a super star in the wizarding world in one day he might’ve thought fame and power were cool, but if you keep reading you’ll see that he doesn’t exactly want all the power he has and the attention he gets.
And yes, he might be a natural leader- like as the de facto teacher of Dumbledore’s Army. But see, he gathered people that WANTED to join him. He made sure he had their consent, their permission for him to teach them. It wasn’t him just going in and forcing people to learn from him or anything.
I hope you’ll go back to the books and understand what I mean. Harry is in no way a fascist or a dictator- but if you looked at Voldemort, than that would be an entirely different story.
Oh, and I am in no way trying to offend you. I think it’s rude that some potterheads think they should have the right to act superior over twihards, and vice versa- everyone has different preferences! The thing that you clearly don’t understand about Harry Potter isn’t exactly about the writing though. It’s about the story and the journey. For my family, it brought us all together even though we all clashed at times. My grandmother in her sixties, my mom in her thirties, my brother in his early teens and me in the single digits, we all could read it and watch the movies and enjoy it.When the last book came out, we all piled into the car and went to the store to buy four copies. It was just a good series that dealt with a parent-less boy who found a good family in his friends and teachers. He came from an abusive muggle adoptive household and ended up saving the world. It also shows that everyone changes and everyone isn’t what they seem, like Snape. And Harry was by no means a dictator. He told Dumbledore’s Army what to do because he was their leader. Elected their leader, I might add. People died for him, yes, but he never told them to. He actually spent most of his time telling them not to.

A teenage girl moves in with her father in a miserable town that she hates and meets a boy. -cue collective sighs- Then here whole life is turned upside down as she realizes that he is a vampire. -cliche much?- She then proceeds to enter into an abusive, toxic relationship that nearly gets everyone around her -including herself- killed. Yeah, no thank you, I think I’ll take the fantastical adventures of Harry Potter.
